It has been a remarkable barnraising!  By definition a barnraising is a when the community comes together to build a barn, a school or a church that individually they could not build alone.  In this case, the community came together in 1939 to create and support the Southwestern Medical Foundation in funding medical education and research that would improve clinical care available in the area and bring the quality up to standards that the east coast was already enjoying.  Dallas did not have a medical school to provide the community with quality physicians when Southwestern Medical Foundation created and operated Southwestern Medical College in 1943.  Southwestern Medical Foundation later donated Southwestern Medical College to the University of Texas to become what we know today as UT Southwestern, which is one of the top medical schools and medical centers in the nation with more Nobel Laureates than anywhere else in the country. It is an incredible story of vision and perseverance that is an important part of what makes Dallas such a great city.

Speaker:  Traci Beeson, Director of Marketing & Communications, Southwestern Medical Foundation
