There is a road along the East side of Mountain Creek Lake called Merrifield. And there is an elementary school in Duncanville named Merrifield.

Anyone have any information on this name?

thanks in advance,

mac

Mac -

I don't have my family charts handy right now but the Merrifield's were early settlers (before 1846) west of the Trinity and by down toward Cedar Hill. At least two were married to a son and grandson of John Beeman and another to a nephew of John Neely Bryan who was foreman of Alexander Cockrell's White House Ranch (now part of the DFW National Cemetery, Potters House and Dallas Baptist University). I think there was a Merrifield / Glover or Hunnicutt intermarriage also.

Almost all traces are gone now but just a few years ago the old Merrifield wagon road that connected current So Merrifield at Kiest to So Merrifield at Mountain Creek Parkway could be seen running through the ravine between the Potters House and DBU and over the ridge that linked Cockrell's original White House Cabin site to the ca 1900 "new" White House Ranch. Current So Merrifield from Mountain Creek Parkway to West Davis was named Blue Cut Road until about 10-15 years ago but I don't know why unless it had something to do with sand and gravel mining in the area.

The small cemetery at the corner of Hampton and Jeffferson by Sunset HS has one remaining Merrifield marker but there was an extensive family burial ground there at one time. Jim Barnes had written about Merrifield being a squatter on the Myers survey to the north. There was also a shooting that involved a Merrifield and a LaReunion colonist but I don't recall the details - search this board back to the beginning and you will find seveal threads.

The Merrifields also operated a stable and wagon yard in downtown Dallas. Lots of descendants are buried at Wheatland and the Bethel Cemetery in Duncanville. I've corresponded with several of the living Merrifields but not recently.

John Merrifield and his wife are buried at the corner of Hampton Road and Jefferson in Oak Cliff. Here is some info on him:

Good reference and additional details in the links to other relatives. I had forgotten about the Daniel Boone connection.

As a child and living in West Oak Cliff, there was a family of Merrifields that lived on Cockrell Hill Rd. in a red brick bungalow type house just west of CHR and Glenhaven. Went all through school the daughter Gail but didn't know their historical significance untl much late rin life.
