Where to get away from Dallas for a day

I suppose for many readers here getting away from Dallas for a day or weekend meant a trip to one of the area lakes. For us it was "going to the farm." That meant one of two places: an ancestral farm southeast of Terrell near College Mound or another bit of rural acreage my Uncle George bought in the 1960s northeast of Terrell near Able Springs. Both had about 100 acres, two tanks, and some trees. They were great places to picnic, hunt, fish, explore, and expend lots of youthful energy outdoors.
The farm at College Mound was near the annual gathering of area families that provided a spread of food you wouldn't believe!

While one is out there on Hwy 80, just east of Terrell they will find Ham Orchards.
Opened from May 15 through August 15, the place is famous for their soft serve peach and strawberry ice cream, not to mention produce and stuff...

I suggest Ben Wheeler and Edom. They are not far From Terrell.
I drive home from Dallas that way every time I can. Google it. You will want to go. It's a great day trip.

For day trips, we used to go fishing and hunting down in the river bottoms outside Ferris, in the Bristol and Walnut Springs area. We would also make day trips to Lake Bridgeport and sometimes to Bardwell Reservoir, down at Ennis. A few times when I was growing up, my dad would take me fishing at a place called Paradise Inn in Sulfur Springs. It was a motel set up as a fishing/hunting lodge and they owned a couple of lakes in the area for their guests to use. We would spend the weekend on those trips so we could do some night fishing. In the fall, they had hunting but also it was a place where people rented rooms for a day to watch the blacked-out Cowboy games because it was just outside the black-out perimeter. Remember when they used to do that?

Ham Orchards is owned by the parents of a school friend. I hear tell that the peach ice cream cannot be beat!

Hope
