Actually, I read this in college many many years ago. At that time the highest elevation (it did not say natural point) in Dallas was on Mockingbird Lane just east of Greenville.

I just looked at Google Earth, and just north of Matilda and Mockingbird, I got 622ft. At some points around I-20 and Spur 408 (specficially at W Camp Wisdom Rd and N Cedar Ridge Dr), I got around 750ft. The official elevation at Dallas Executive Airport (the former Red Bird airport) is 660ft. I wonder if the City of Dallas knows the information?

As a matter of curiosity has anyone checked Flagpole Hill? I probably would have guessed Flagpole Hill, although with the prompt I remember being aware, long ago, the rise described by Ronnie M.

A little off topic, but the highest elevation in downtown Dallas is the corner of Main/Harwood.

The highest number I can see around Flag Pole Hill is 550ft, according to Google Earth. That would be 70ft lower than the Matilda and Greenville reading.

Per this reference the highest elevation in Dallas County is Cedar Hill at 870 teet above sea level.

Map and coordinates here: Texas Peaks

If you follow the ridgeline of Cedar Mountain northward from there you will find several sites within the Dallas City limits that are over 800 feet above sea level.

Try the hill at 45 and 20 and see what you get. It is Dallas and was supposedly the spot where Sam Bass stashed his last take.

I'm assuming you meant Spur 408 and I-20 south of Mountain Creek Lake. There are three prominent peaks around that interchange but only 707, 731, and 741 feet above sea level.

Near I-45 and I-20 is mostly bottom land of Five Mile Creek and Trinity River. The highest natural hill in the vicinity is 515 feet above sea level. Don't know how high the mountain of trash at McCommas Bluff Landfill might reach but the surrounding plain and riverbank is only about 400 feet above sea level.

Had not heard that particular tale re Sam Bass but pretty much every crook, cranny, cave and hilltop has been suggested. Don't know that any ever yielded any treasure.

Not to digress too much but where might I find the La Reunion gold?

Not the highest point in Dallas, but I know one of the best views of Dallas was where the old Millermore mansion was located off Bonnieview. Before that house was moved, it sat on a bluff that overlooked downtown Dallas.

Tho probably just south of Dallas County one of the most gorgeous views I can recollect: South on 67 past Cedar Hill, right on Mt Lebanon, down Texas Plume Road, left at the Old Grounds Cemetery and back up the mountain. Jump the gate and walk a 1/2 mile to the edge of the mountain there was a tall platform. On a clear day you could see Ft.Worth but catch it when the clouds are just right and the sunsets are Spectacular..

I have spent the day looking at old maps and photo graphs.
One post lists Millermore as on Bonnieview/Illinois by Miller Park. Is that a bluff there?
I am not in Texas anymore-or I would go check myself.
My Dad always told me that though.

Numerous folks have suggested Mockingbird x east of Skillman as the high spot of Dallas. Its the "in your face" high spot (if I'm thinking
correctly it's that odd spot of several failed businesses hijacked by the cloverleaf there). Anyway, I'm still wondering about the earlier history of ownership. Leslie

The highest point in East Dallas, and maybe all of the City of Dallas, is that block bounded by Greenville Ave, Mockingbird, Matilda and the Dart Line to the north. There is a water storage tank there underground. The spot was chosen because it was so high, 625 ft elevation. It serves most of East Dallas. The top of the tank measures 325 ft by 450 ft. I don't know how deep it is.

This would be the NEcorner of Greenvill and Mockingbird? It would be on the east side of Greenville from the old Dr. Pepper plant? In the 40s, 50s, 60s, and ??? that tank was above ground--or at least there was a tank/ storage facility at that location that was above ground. Do I remember correctly?

Yes Reagant You remember well. It is better landscaped than most parks and you can't tell it is a storage tank. I always thought it was mostly below ground but I will check on that.

Looking at a topo map, it looks like the land also rises to about 620 feet on Forest Lane just west of Abrams in north Dallas. There are some water tanks there like at the high point at Matilda and Mockingbird.

The Matilda/Mockingbird point is the southern tip of a ridge that runs NNW from there just north of SMU and toward Valley View Mall. In general the land in the Hillcrest/Preston corridor from SMU (the Hilltop) northward is above 600 feet with peaks of 641 feet near the Caruth home just south of Northpark Mall and and 655 feet at Valley View Mall.

Down south of the river, Camp Wisdom Boy Scout camp near Red Bird mall is on a hilltop at about 760 feet. Off of Sorcey Rd near the Dallas-Cedar Hill line there is a peak at 785 feet or so. It looks like that is the highest point in the City of Dallas in that area. All the higher ground is in the City of Cedar Hill. There is a 720 foot hill near Wheatland and 67 and 735 feet near Red Bird Land and Cockrell Hill Rd.

In Oak Cliff there's a peak at 622 feet near Sunset HS.

My verdict is that the 785 foot spot near the Dallas-Cedar Hill line is the highest spot in Dallas.

I checked with a friend of mine who worked at the Water Dept. he said that the tank was about 40 ft underground.
