Posted by Mike W Thompson
Dug up an interesting bottle near Exall Park on Bryan Street.Imprinted in the glass on the side it says;Hughes Bros.Mfg.Co.Dallas,Texas.Registered.And has a picture of a lady smiling and waving.
Im curious what this may have contained and what was Hughes Bros.Company doing in Dallas?
The handbook of Texas says that Royal Ferris was a vice-president of the Company.

I won't ask you whose property you were digging into (grin). Hughes Brothers had many interests including an early candy & soft drink business. One of their remaining buildings can be seen near Old City Park off South Ervay, being remodeled from the Gulf Cone Company.
Thank you for the info Chevy. It is in the shape of a soda bottle.Any idea on when Hughes began doing business in Dallas? It's from an excavation for a building Im doing.I cant resist poking around and seeing what gets dug up.Have found many other old bottles,RR spikes and horse and mule shoes etc.It appears from what i've found the area was residential about the mid 1870s.There is also a rail line now covered over by concrete under Bryan Street.Perhaps a trolley going by Exall Park or the old St.Paul Hospital.
