Wimpy's Hamburgers on Singleton
September 13, 2004 09:24AM
I was driving down Singleton yesterday and saw a really cool vintage sign for a hamburger place called "Wimpy's Hamburgers"....Address is 1802 Singleton..The place was closed...I don't know anything about it? Looks to be pretty old judging by the great sign out front. Anybody have any info? Are the hamburgers any good? thanks !
Wimpy was a character in the Popeye cartoons/comics. He was always eating hamburgers and said "I'll pay you Tuesday".
We used that phrase a lot when ordering a hamburger at Wimpy's downtown in Dallas in the 1950s. It never worked.
I remember the hamburgers were delicious and they fried the buns on the grill. There were huge Wimpy, Popeye, Olive Oyl (yes, it was spelled with a y) and Bluto and Sweet Pea pictures painted on the walls. Tile floors and very sparse tables and chairs. One of my favorite Popeye cartoons was when he was Aladdin. The other was about Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. My favorite line from that was "Salami, salami, baloney". Channel 28 has Cartoon Zone each afternoon at 3PM, and they often play Popeye cartoons and other oldies. They also play some ancient movies.

I recall the Wimpy's you speak of on Singleton.
I passed by it many ah time. Don't recall ever stopping there for a purchase. This was back in the late 50's. I was a teenager, and that was not exactly my part of town. I was from the other side of the river, had to be careful.
It was a gathering place for the locals. I guess
I was more of a "loco" in those day's. lol.
Also recall when the projects were built. I'm sure many ah story can be told about Singleton during the 40's, and previous.
Have a great one!
Jeanette thanks so much for solving a mystery for me. I've seen that Wimpy's hamburger place on Singleton for years and wondered about it. I'm glad someone on here asked about it. I wrongly assumed that it was someone's last name. If they had one downtown there might have been others too or then again maybe not.
Ya know, it's kind of sad that places don't make hamburgers like they used to. I know there are a slew of places that make good burgers but they aren't as good as "the way they were."
I don't think Wimpy's on Singleton has been closed all that long. Maybe a couple of years or so. ((MayBe)).. I do remember it being open not to long ago.... OR has time just flew by.!?!?

I heard a rumor that the owner of Wimpy's Hamburgers on Singleton won the state lottery a few years back. I don
Here's some history on Wimpy's:
1931 - Popeye the sailor man, a cartoon figures in the comic strip created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929, and syndicated by the Hearst newpapers's King Features syndicate featured the character J. Wellington Wimpy, known as Wimpy. Wimpy joined the Popeye comic strip in 1931, and he played a significant role in popularizing the hamburger in the United States. Wimpy is probably best know for his consumption of hamburgers. Wimpy loves to eat hamburgers, but is usually too cheap to pay for them. A recurring joke is Wimpy's attempts to con other members of the diner into buying him burgers. Wimpy often tries to outwit fellow patrons with his convoluted logic. His famous line is "I'd gladly pay you Thuesday for a hamburger today."
The popularity the character Wimpy spawned a successful chain of hamburger restaurants called Wimpy's, that flourished for over a decade. This burger went for the upscale market at 10 cents a burger. In keeping with the founder's wishes, all 1,500 restaurants were closed down when he died in 1978.

Regarding Wipys, well here is a photo I snapped today, with a bit of history added to it.

Hey Abel, there is a posting about the Dallas Housing Projects. I found them about a month ago when I discovered this message board.
