Entrance Sign to Dallas Love Field

Posted by Ratkitty
I just recently discovered this very informative bulletin board of very knowledgeable contributors who probably know the answer to a question that has troubled me for many years.
In the process of improving the roadways at Love Field, the old entrance sign - an endearingly kitschy structure that recalled the colors and abstractions of the late-50's and early-60's "Jet Age" - was removed and replaced by stolid piece of stone with a tasteful logo and title that conjures up nothing more exciting than the security desk in the lobby of high rise office building. Is the old sign in a warehouse waiting for preservation and resurrection, or has it been destroyed?
Dear ratkitty: you're not the only person who misses that sign. It conjured up the "prime years" of mid-century Dallas with those Piet Mondrian-logo blocks. There are still some similar decorative struts on the Home Furnishings part of the Trade Center on Stemmons.
I hate to say it, but I don't think the City kept that sign (although I hold a fond hope).
The old entrance sign for Dallas Love Field is currently being stored in the airport's Field Maintenance complex. The plan is to have the
sign restored to its original condition and erected in a plaza at the corner of Mockingbird Lane and Denton Drive. The design for the plaza has been completed and construction will commence once funding is
available.

Thanks for finding and posting that information.
It will be great to have that old sign restored and available to the public again. I worked at Love Field for two years in the early 60s and remember it well.

Well, this is semi-related to the sign at Love Field.....
When I was in high school (W. H. Adamson, Class of '71), a bunch of "us girls" had a lot of slumber parties. One of the milder things we used to do during them was to go to Love Field in the middle of the night and watch for cute guys (especially those in uniform) deplaning. We just looked; never did catch one, LOL!
And, did y'all know there's a "typo" in the world map in the lobby? One of the city's names is misspelled. Anyone else know which one it is?
I do!

Becky~
If you girls did not 'catch one'...THEY... were not looking at you.. We need not see you, to feel your Happy Spirit! It's contageous, you know. Thanks!
Happy Linda says that Fred R. was one of those 'guys'....I'm not sure of his timeframe, but I can vouch for his looks.....( You can pay me later, Fred)
Now, please don't let us wait too long! I can't even picture the World Map in the Lobby!
What's the city? What's the city???

No, no, Linda; I won't give it up that easily! I'll bet there's someone out there who knows besides me. I will give you a hint, however; it's a city East of the mighty Mississippi River.

Oh, and the map is on the floor, done in terrazzo with brass inlays.

I don't blame you! I thought...3 days??? I'm guessing with the crew we have here, someone else may be privy.
I can vaguely picture the map. I think what would be great fun, is to hear about your shenanigans with your friends!!!
Care to share?? Who did you meet? What did you do? Did you holler as planes went overhead?
This is off subject but just crossed my mind. I was walking through Love Field, ending a 3-day trip, when I passed a couple in debate.. ( 1998'ish)
The man turned to me( I was in SWA uniform) and said: "Tell her"...The semi-circles at either end of the runway, is incase a pilot has to cancel take-off. He hits the semi-circle like a skateboarder...and turns around...right???? Mrs.Linda???
Uhhhhhhhh....Uhhh... It's noise abatement. "Gotta run"!!!!! smiling smiley
How funny are those boys?!! Methinks he was serious!
Now, this is driving me nuts, because I know I have looked at that map a lot more than once. Becky, you and Linda know how much I used to travel. I am sure I have walked over the map. And the misspelled city rings a bell as well.
BH.
Man, I'm sitting in my office at this moment not 100 yards from the terminal at Love Field and it's all I can do not to abandon my desk and go look at that map. :-)

Linda, we didn't do much more than ogle and attempt to flirt. Once, we baked a cake, thinking we'd give it to some poor soldier as a welcome home gift. Never did see anyone who we thought qualified so we ended up giving it to a Dallas police officer to take back to the station. In those days, I guess they (the police) weren't too worried about getting poisoned or drugged, and besides, we looked pretty harmless, LOL!
As to the misspelling; it's Phildelphia.
Be doggoned, I never noticed that and I'll bet I walked across that sign forty ot fifty times while I was working a post for Wackenhut a few months in 1971 (needed a short term job before i satred law school and they were hiring).
Something new every day...
On a similar subject related to hanging out at Love Field. Did anybody ever go to that great arcade on the ground floor? It was open all hours. Pinball and arcade games - oh man! I'm still a pinball nut (have 3 machines) and also love old arcade games! I think most of the interest for them came from a lot of time spent there!

Becky, I feel certain that you and your friends provided memories for more than one guy!
Whoa! That just didn't come out right!...... But I went ahead & said it because it's just funny! I mean that; Somewhere in Cyberspace, someone who was at Love Field is telling someone else on a message board....about these young ladies who brought them cake, and made them feel special!
What fun. And Thanks for the answer. I'm in shock I never knew that!
