As is sometimes the case, this is a garbled discussion. OP posed the question about naming the grades of Gulf gasoline and then said ..."there were three of them." As I pointed out, there were only TWO grades of gasoline sold in major company outlets until the mid-70s--for example, Texaco had Fire Chief (regular) and Sky Chief (ethyl). The addition of a third "intermediate" grade came sometime in the 70s as I explained in my previous post.

Electronic ignition control that became pretty much standard in the 80s did manage to overcome most performance issues so that using regular worked fine for almost all cars. I think that the claim that cars got better mileage, etc. with higher grade gas is totally unfounded.

I've owned close to 40 cars in my life, including 8 high performance Corvettes, and of those purchased since 1975, only the 1999 came with factory recommendations for premium gas. The recommendation was based on performance issues, not gas mileage.

Believe what you will.

Alto If you will notice oil companies no longer advertise the higher octane gasoline. That is because all automobiles will run on regular. The computer in your auto will correct any problem. You may loose a little horsepower and get a mile of two less per gallon but your car will run just a well. Auto makers will not tell you this because they advertise so many miles per gallon if you run on higher octane and you cannot get that milage with regular but it sure is a lot cheaper when you pay.
I drove my Cadillac and my Mercury Marque on regular and never had a problem

Yep, just two grades of gasoline, regular and ethyl, until sometime in the early 70s--maybe a bit later. After the first Arab oil embargo, sales of ethyl dropped because prices had shot up so much. When unleaded began to be phased in c1974 because of clean air regulations, the genisuses in the marketing departments of the big oil companies came up with so-called mid-grade gasoline. Lower priced than ethyl but more than regular.

The suckers that humans are, we fell for the notion that it was "better" than regular and spent a few extra dollars for a bump of a couple of octane numbers and got nothing that made any significant difference in performance or gas mileage.

When I was 12, my uncle drove me through the Gulf Oil refinery down in South Texas. It was supposed to be the largest refinery in the world at the time. We drove through at night and it was quite a spectacle with everything lit up and flares burning off gas and lighting up the night sky. I can only imagine what Homeland Security would do if you tried to drive through a refinery these days. I also remember making my father fill up with Gulf gas so we could get a pair of those foam horseshoes they were giving away as a promotion for No Nox (knocks out the knocks...) I guess that was Gulf's effort to compete with tiger tails hanging from gas tanks.

I can think of Good Gulf, and No-Nox (Ethyl).
