Dallas History Timeline: The 1980s

1981 - Dallas Arboretum opens on the grounds of the DeGolyer Estate on White Rock Lake.

1982 - New Central Dallas Public Library opens opposite City Hall.

1984 - Dallas hosts the Republican National Convention. Dallas Museum of Art moves into new facilities downtown.

1985 - 72-story InterFirst Plaza opens at Main and Griffin, as the tallest building in Dallas.

1986 - The State Fair of Texas celebrates its 100th anniversary and the state's sesquicentennial.

1987 - Annette Strauss becomes the first woman elected Mayor of Dallas.

1989 - McKinney Avenue Trolley inaugurates service. Dallas Symphony Orchestra moves into the Meyerson Symphony Center.

1990 - Population of Dallas is 1,006,877.

1991 - Dallas celebrates its 150th birthday.
